Morphologic Changes in Pulmonary Emphysema.

چکیده
I NTENSE INTEREST EXPRESSED BY CLINIcians, physiologists, and pathologists in pulmonary emphysema has stimulated the need for establishing some criteria for the normal anatomy and subsequent pathologic change. Regardless of the conflict in the theories of etiology, we must be cognizant of certain changes which take place in the pulmonary parenchyma. The fine relationships between structure, function, and the effects of the disease process previously have been difficult to study. Routine histologic studies on conventional 5p sections of lung provided earlier morphologists with considerable information regarding certain structural changes. Newer techniques developed in recent years now provide a means for obtaining additional pathologic information which was beyond the capabilities of previous methods.'" One may now survey overall changes in the gnws sections of the lung, as well as investigate additional histologic responses in the alveolar wall, vasculature, and corresponding airway structures. Documentation of these changes, combined with pre-

Pulmonary function tests versus computed tomography in sheep with experimental emphysema.
The authors explored the relative utility of pulmonary function tests (PFTs) and computed tomography (CT) to characterize the progression of papain induced emphysema in sheep (n = 12). PFT included plethysmography (FRC(pleth)), helium dilution (FRC(He)), and expired reserve volume (ERV). Following papain, FRC(pleth) and FRC(He) were unchanged; ERV decreased hence residual volume increased signi...
متن کاملBronchoscopy and bronchography in emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Demonstration of morphologic changes in an attempt at appraisal of severity of functional impairment.
S TIMES AND INVESTIGATIVE METHODS change and contrast media are improved , one is tempted to assemble the various findings and correlate them with the known pathologic alterations in chronic bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema. The following text and illustrations deal with certain aspects of morphologic findings as seen by the clinician in the course of a pulmonary study. This study is based up...
متن کاملBreakdown of lung framework and an increase in pores of Kohn as initial events of emphysema and a cause of reduction in diffusing capacity
PURPOSE Pulmonary emphysema is the pathological prototype of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and is also associated with other lung diseases. We considered that observation with different approaches may provide new insights for the pathogenesis of emphysema. PATIENTS AND METHODS We reviewed tissue blocks of the lungs of 25 cases with/without emphysema and applied a three-dimensional obs...
متن کاملOral sildenafil prevents and reverses the development of pulmonary hypertension in monocrotaline-treated rats.
The endothelin system plays an important role in the development of pulmonary hypertension. Several studies have suggested that interfering with the function of the endothelin system will be helpful in pulmonary hypertension treatment. In the present study, we investigated the preventive and therapeutic effects of sildenafil on pulmonary hypertension in monocrotaline-treated rats. In the preven...
متن کاملLetters to the Editor Morphological Quantitation of Emphysema: A Debate The following series of letters to the editor concerns a recently published morphologic method proposed by Parameswaran and colleagues for sensitive, early detection of emphysema
The following series of letters to the editor concerns a recently published morphologic method proposed by Parameswaran and colleagues for sensitive, early detection of emphysema (J Appl Physiol 100: 186–193, 2006). The validity of the proposed method was critiqued by Ewald Weibel, and, in turn, this critique was rebutted by Parameswaran et al. Additional brief commentaries were contributed by ...
